Surrealist Short Film

Two films that were made during the height of the surrealist period were Un Chien Andalou (1929) and Meshes of the Afternoon (1943). Both of these films featured a non-linear plot and some shocking imagery. The goal of the surrealist movement was to tap into the imagery of the unconscious mind, so therefore these films were made without a traditional narrative structure. Both films have a dream-like quality. Most surrealist artwork tried to tap into dreams and the inner-workings of the mind, and images like the eye being cut open in Un Chien Andalou, are truly memorable and shocking, even after almost a century.
